Club History

The Vancouver Island Lure Coursing Association (VILCA) was formed in June 1997 to support and promote lure coursing for sighthounds. Sighthound breeds eligible for registration with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) include: Afghan Hound, Azawakh, Basenji, Borzoi, Deerhound (Scottish), Greyhound, Italian Greyhound, Ibizan Hound, Pharaoh Hound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Whippet and (Irish) Wolfhound.

In 2018, the CKC added ‘Sprinters’, a 100-metre dash, and Chase Ability Program (CAP) for all CKC registered breeds. CAP has two types of courses: one for small dogs, shorter than 12 inches at the withers, or brachycephalic dogs, and one for all other breeds. Dogs run singly in both CAP and Sprinters.

VILCA is approved to hold all three types of events. We hold 2-day lure coursing trials for sighthounds, usually in spring and fall, and two to three Sprinter and/or CAP events. All events are held on Vancouver Island.

The Club tries to hold a practice about once a month from spring to fall, depending on weather and field conditions and availability of experienced volunteers to run the lure.
